No guesswork

Plenty of plants get mistaken for knotweed, so check before you pay for anything.

Take a clear photo of a leaf and a section of stem and send it over. We reply with what it is and it costs nothing. A visit only comes into it if it is knotweed, and the price is agreed in writing beforehand.

What delay costs

A small stand today is a big one in three years

The canes die back every winter and look harmless. The crown and rhizome underground keep spreading, and a stand ignored for a few seasons covers far more ground than it did.

— What you never get

  • Travel anywhere in Salford

  • A copy of your own report

Reports are written with RICS guidance on knotweed and residential property in mind. Take it to any contractor you like.

Japanese knotweed along a boundary fence in Irlams o' th' Height
Knotweed in Irlams o' th' Height

Riverbank, canal bank and cleared plots, all in one city.

Irlams o' th' Height is a hilltop district above the Irwell valley, with interwar and postwar housing and steep gardens running down towards wooded valley sides. Gardens on that slope are the ones to watch, because material travels downhill from the river valley and old railway land.

A survey shows whether the stand began on your land or came across the boundary.

Also covering the rest of Salford — same price, same service.

Questions we get asked

Does knotweed move uphill from the valley?
Not by itself, but soil moved by people and the spread of fragments can carry it. A spring check of the back boundary is worth the five minutes.
How do I know if it is Japanese knotweed?
Look at the stem: it is hollow like bamboo, flecked with purple and grows in a zig-zag, with a node at each bend. Leaves are shield-shaped with a flat base. Late summer brings creamy flower sprays, and in winter you are left with brown, brittle canes. The fastest check is to send us a photo.
Is it illegal to have knotweed in my garden?
No, owning it is not an offence. Letting it spread into the wild is, and the waste has to be handled as controlled waste. If it crosses onto a neighbour's land you could face a claim.
Will knotweed stop me getting a mortgage?
It does not have to. Lenders mostly want to see a survey, a treatment plan and an insurance-backed guarantee that can pass to the next owner.
How long does treatment take?
A spraying programme normally runs three to five growing seasons and is then monitored. Excavation takes days, but costs more.
Can I just dig it out myself?
It is a poor idea. Small fragments of rhizome regrow, and the soil you lift cannot go in a skip or the green bin without proper handling.
Does knotweed damage houses?
It exploits weak points such as cracked paving, drains, walls and outbuildings. Sound foundations are seldom the issue, but it will still hit a valuation and a sale.
What if it is coming from my neighbour?
Have it surveyed so the extent and direction of spread are on record. That record is what you take to the neighbour or their landlord.

Do not dig, strim or bag it until it has been identified.
